An engagement session is a special moment to capture the love and excitement between you and your partner. It’s a chance to create beautiful memories before your big day. But preparing for this session can sometimes feel overwhelming. From choosing the right outfit to managing nerves, there are many details to consider. The good news is that with some thoughtful planning, you can enjoy your engagement session without stress and look your best in every photo.

Haircuts
This one is for the guys especially!
At this point, you are about 6 months away from your actual wedding day and your soon to be wife has planned most of the entire wedding. I hate to pick on you from the start, but we have to make sure that everything is perfect for you upcoming shoot.
Schedule your haircut about a week before the engagement session so all is perfect. From experience, your soon to be wife will want you to look your absolute best and I must agree. When I mean go get a haircut, my main focus is on the neckline - the back of your head and let us not forget some nose hairs to simply put it.
Makeup - Simply to enhance your natural beauty!
Keep it simple and natural
Avoid heavy shimmer or glitter. These can reflect light and create unwanted shine in photos.
Use waterproof mascara and setting spray. This keeps your makeup intact, especially if you expect to be outdoors or emotional.
Bring a small touch-up kit. Include lipstick, powder, and blotting papers to refresh your look during breaks.
Pick Outfits That Reflect Your Style and Fit the Location
Your clothing choices set the tone for your engagement photos and help tell your story as a couple.
I normally recommend a dressy look and one casual look.
Coordinate colors without matching exactly. Choose complementary tones that work well together and suit the environment.
Consider the location’s vibe. For a beach session, light and airy fabrics work well. For urban settings, structured pieces and layers add interest.
Avoid busy patterns or logos. Solid colors or subtle prints keep the focus on you and your partner.
Bring a couple of outfit options. This gives variety and lets you adapt if the weather changes.
Wear comfortable shoes. You might be walking or standing for a while, so comfort matters.
Try on your outfits a few days before and take test photos in natural light to see how they look on camera.
Prepare Mentally to Stay Calm and Enjoy the Moment
Stress can show in your photos, so managing your mindset is just as important as your appearance.
Get a good night’s sleep before the session. Rest helps reduce puffiness and improves your mood.
Eat a light, balanced meal beforehand. Avoid heavy or greasy foods that might make you feel sluggish.
Practice deep breathing or mindfulness exercises. These techniques help calm nerves and keep you present.
Talk openly with your partner and photographer. Share any concerns or ideas to create a relaxed atmosphere.
Remember the session is about your connection. Focus on enjoying time together rather than perfect poses.
When you feel relaxed and happy, your photos will naturally reflect that energy.

Pack a Small Bag with Essentials for the Day
Bringing a few key items can make your session smoother and more comfortable.
Water and snacks. Staying hydrated and energized keeps you feeling your best.
Makeup touch-up kit. Lip balm, powder, and concealer help maintain your look.
Hairbrush or comb. Fix any stray hairs quickly.
Comfortable shoes or sandals. Change if needed between shots.
Tissues or wipes. Useful for unexpected tears or sweat.
Having these items on hand lets you focus on the experience instead of distractions.
Most importantly.
Discuss your vision and preferences ahead of time. Share examples of styles or poses you like.
Consider golden hour shots and either prepare for an early morning shoot or late afternoon.
Final Tips to Avoid Stress on the Day of the Session
Give yourself plenty of time to get ready. Rushing creates tension and can affect your mood.
Avoid last-minute changes to hair or makeup. Stick to what you practiced.
Wear clothes that make you feel confident. Confidence shows in photos.
Keep your phone on silent or off. Stay focused on the moment.
Enjoy the experience. Remember this is a celebration of your relationship.
